In the second grade I had a big crush on this pretty little blonde girl in my class. But every time I tried to talk to her, she blew me off. She wasn't mean about it, and she could have been, but she just wasn't interested.
One day I won a contest and the prize was this pretty red balloon. I don't know what it was about this balloon (perhaps it was just the fact this was before video games and 900 channels) but we'd ALL wanted this balloon. So when I won it I was the envy of the whole class.
When school was over for the day, the pretty little blonde girl came up to me and asked if she could have the balloon. Obviously I gave it to her and was glad to do so. She smiled and thanked me.
The next day she went right back to ignoring me.
You know what I've learned in all the years between then and now? Absolutely nothing. I still find myself giving away my pretty red balloons to pretty smiles and am glad to do so despite knowing in the back of my mind I'm about to get screwed.
You can't teach some people.
